By Ign Andy

Personally, keyword is the most important thing for me before I start writing. Keywords can make or break a site or hubs, good keywords selection can drive hundreds pageviews/traffic from Google search for your site or here on Hubpages, even without any promoting activities.

There are many good keyword research tools, paid or free, to help you researching the right keywords to use in inside your content. But if you won’t spend any dollar, Google Adwords Keyword Tool is the best keywords research tool available. Here, I want to share my experience using the new Google Keyword Tool to find high traffic keyword searched with low competition.

New Google Keywords Tool

The new Google Adwords Keywords Tool not just has different interface but has new essential components that didn’t available in old Google keywords tool and monthly number of keyword search volumes no longer includes measures from Google’s search partners, so the total searched numbers substantially lower. In many cases, the different can be thousand and make that keyword not worth to be advertised. In reality many users find that the new numbers to be much more in line with their experience.

Since Google already remove the old keyword tool for good, the best thing to do is to experiment with this new Google keyword tool and get the most of it.

Recommended tools

Two of the most recommended tools for Keyword research and SEO are:

  • SEO Book also offer many useful tool for keyword research powered by Wordtracker engine and SEO tools for firefox, these are free tools if you sign up. Get more insight about how to perform better on Google search and join the club.
  • Market Samurai, you can try this tool 30 days trial. Many other useful features in the package including SEO competition, rack tracker, domain suggestion and many more. You may also check Market Samurai blog to find more information about keyword research.

Guide for Keyword Search

Go to Google Adwords keyword tool. You can get up to 800 keywords at a time if you’re signed in with a free Google account and if you don’t Google will limit to 100 keywords.

Pick your niche for keyword ideas and type in Find Keywords box and choose your target locations and languages. In this example I choose credit card for keyword, and then click search. As you can see, the result shows 100 keywords and most of them have high competition. Personally, I avoid these type of keywords Although these keywords potentially drive high traffic, but they will cost you arm and leg to perform. So what we have to do next?

Pick your niche, type in and start your keyword research

  • Refine your search click the advanced options and filter your keywords. There are two essential filters I always use: Local Monthly Search and Competition. Input your minimum number of search in Local Monthly Search box, for your guidance, according to some researches number #1 result on Google search usually get around 50% of total searches, #2 result get 40% and the rest of page 1 result (#3 - #10) get around 2% to 6% of total search. 1000 local monthly, about 500 monthly (17 traffics/day) Google search traffics will go to #1 search result, 400 got to #2 and so on. Usually I set the minimum 1500; there is no exact number on this, just my personal preference.
  • Add the competition filter by giving a check mark inside the low and medium check box, and then click the search again. As result Google Adwords Keyword tool will present different keywords with medium - low ads competition and minimum number of traffic you previously set. These results are ready to use keywords but if you do a few more filter you will get better keywords to use for your content.

Filter out high competition keywords and set your minimum number of search

  • Filter out some keywords using minimum and/or maximum pay per click (estimate average CPC). If you plan to promote your site/page, use maximum pay per click to get high searched keywords with lowest cost per click. And if you plan to get some revenue from Adsense, you may consider excluding some keywords with $0.05 /click.

Add Cost per Click (CPC) filter, set minimum filter if you plan to put Adsense in your webpage. Filter out high CPC if you plan to promote your site.

Fine Tuning keyword search for your niche

Few last step to fine tune and rechecking your keywords:

Refine search query using match types: Broad, Exact, and Phrase. These match types illustrate how close a user's search query was to an actual keyword, below some example of search result and probable user query:

Google Adwords Keyword User Query Match Type

Mach Type
Google Adwords Queries
Possible Users Queries
Broad match
Fruit Diet
"Fruit and Veggie Diet"
Phrase match
"Fruit Diet"
"Raw Fruit Diet"
Phrase match
"Fruit Diet"
"Fruit Diet Guide"
Exact Match
[Fruit Diet]
"Fruit Diet"
Fine Tune your keywords, repeat the process for another keywords and compare the result
Fine Tune your keywords, repeat the process for another keywords and compare the result

For me, if all filters above ate fit, the Exact Match is THE KEYWORD for your niche market, phrase match and broad match are use for reference how many traffic potentially the keyword. Iterate this process whenever you have better keyword ideas to start.

(note: if you researching keywords for Adsense - pick keywords with medium competition, this way you have enough ads for your articles)

The next things you need to do are buy a domain name, find a good web hosting provider, set up a blog and write. Or you can do a short cut and sign up with Hubpages, writing, drive some traffic from search engine, and ready to earn some extra income.

I read about the private paid tool's availability for keyword research work. But these tools also need to collect the data from the tools officially provided by Search engines. So I would prefer to go for Google Adwords any day.

Google Ad word Keyword tool is the most powerful tool for judging what you should expect from your writing. Every time I don't use it and just write from impulse, my hub performs terribly but a careful use of the tool will bring your hubs a decent amount of traffic that is targeted and absolutely useful. Thanks for your advice.
