Nintendo 3DS Review – Is Nintendo 3DS Really that Good?
57Two most awaited console come to market this year: the Sony
PSP 2 and Nintendo 3DS. Sony PSP2 will only available in the holiday season,
the Nintendo 3DS will officially launched in USA on March 27, 2011 but you can place
your pre-order at Amazon USA now, shipping available other countries including Canada, Asia and Australia.
Despite the popularity of XBOX 360, Sony PS3 and Wii, the Nintendo DS remains it the all bestselling handheld games console with over 130 million units sold and kick his little brother the Game Boy down. When Nintendo DS were born, many people doubt this console can survive especially after Sony release Sony PSP with more pleasing screen and more polished device.
I bought Nintendo DS and PSP (also Wii and PS 3) for my
kids, they are enjoy playing with all those console but evidently the DS is the
one that has longest flying time at home or when we traveling. Even I enjoy
play Super Mario Bros and Chinatown Wars to kill time (note: I almost 40 and I still
enjoy play games once in a while). I wrote this Nintendo 3DS review because I enjoy the test drive.

I believe the strong points of Nintendo are always the gameplay, simplicity and enjoyment of playing games with no need to be a hard core gamer. That’s said, at first I slightly skeptical about the concept when Nintendo introduced Nintendo 3DS. The main feature with “Experience incredible gameplay featuring real 3D graphics, with no need for special glasses” is not Nintendo’s bread and butter, too gimmicky for Nintendo and does the 3D feature add value to the playing experience …. That until I heard the Japan Nintendo 3DS launching news. I mean 400,000 units sold within hours with some of those sales served 2000 persons, this is must be really something.
We shouldn’t have doubt on Nintendo 3DS
Or more exactly Nintendo the company. Seriously, they create Wii, while others compete at the same field, Nintendo manage to think out of the box and create new game play. Then the big follower (ehm… Microsoft) create kinect.
I always expect Nintendo deliver something new and that’s what they gave in the 3DS. The whole ideas of 3D screen are creating new mechanic and new gaming experience into handheld device and not only pleasing your eyes. If you manage to go to 3DS demo tour and try a few of the games, you knew what it means. 3DS Super Street Fighter IV is very polished game, all characters look real as if the pop out of the screen, or a submarine games that seems live in front of you.
The 3D screen is not stands alone and accompanied by built in gyro sensor and motion sensor. So whenever you move or tilting the system (accidently or deliberately), they will react instantly. Nintendo 3DS uses 2 cameras to mimic 3D world for better experiences. The 3DS also pre-loaded with a few games and apps.
There are many games specially enhanced for this device including: Pilotwings Resort, Asphalt, Lego Star Wars: Clone Wars, Madden NFL Football (should be very interesting play this games on 3D screen), Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, Ridge Racer, The Sims and Combat of Giants; all of these available on the day of US official 3DS launch day. While The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Kid Icarus, Resident Evil and Mario’s games should wait until summer.

A few more features that make this system worth to buy:
- A Circle Pad control, this control combined with gyro, motion and 3D features gives more power for game developers to create advanced game play.
- Backward compatibility, Nintendo claims this 3DS will play all games for Nintendo DS family. So you don’t waste your DS game collections.
- 3D depth slider allows you to instantly adjust the 3D settings on to your liking.
- The System use UV-anti fingerprint exterior coating. It doesn’t mean there’ll be no finger print but it will be easy to wipe off.
- Street Pass communication features, which allows exchange game data like Mii™ characters, high scores and games records and to interact with other 3DS users
- The Nintendo 3DS is region locks, but Like most great game device it will be hacked to break the limitation of games (base on personal observations).
The 3DS is a great system offering new game mechanic for handheld console. Just too bad if you just bought the previous Nintendo DS system. I will suggest to purchase this system when you found games you really want to play.
This 3DS sold at $249, very competitive price compare to the original Japanese version: $300. However, unlike Apple that practically updates their products every year, Nintendo usually updates after a few years. So you should not expect 2nd generation of 3DS within the next 2-year.

I'm after one of these for Christmas this year - and your hub has convinced me to get one.
I too am almost 40 and have been a gamer since the 8-bit home computer days. Still love it!
